It’s important to take care of your oral health during pregnancy

If you’re expecting a baby, you’ll know that there is loads to think about during your pregnancy. You need to make sure that you take good care of yourself — from eating right and making sure you get enough exercise, to dealing with all the changes your body is going through as best you can.

When it comes to your oral health, it’s important that you pay particular attention. Here’s what you should bear in mind…

  1. You may notice bleeding gums
Because of hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, it is quite common for pregnant women to experience swollen and bleeding gums, as well as what is known as pregnancy gingivitis. If you notice any signs of gum disease, it’s important that you come in for a check-up so that we can offer treatment as early as possible. Research shows that there is a link between gum disease and premature labour, as well as a greater risk of pre-eclampsia and low birth weight.
  2. Morning sickness might affect your teeth
Unfortunately, for many women morning sickness is a part of their pregnancy journey, and it can cause a number of oral health issues. In some cases, acid from the stomach can cause damage to the teeth, causing the enamel to erode. Also, if you struggle with heartburn during your pregnancy, you may experience a similar problem as the gastric acid can damage your teeth. If you throw up, rinse your mouth out afterwards before brushing your teeth.
  3. It’s ok to see your dentist
If you are pregnant, please do let us know so that we can plan treatments around the birth of your baby if necessary. Sometimes, it is best to postpone certain procedures but we still encourage you to come in for your regular check-ups. We will help to keep your teeth and gums healthy, and pick up on any issues before they cause serious problems. Generally, the second trimester is the best time of a pregnancy to perform minor dental work like cleaning and fillings.

Our team is committed to providing you with the best possible dental care and is passionate about keeping your smile healthy in every stage of your life.
