Healthy Hygiene Tip: Mouth Rinses

Mouth rinses offer certain benefits but they shouldn’t be used as a substitute for good oral hygiene habits; tooth brushing and flossing; and the use of interdental brushes like piksters.

Not all mouth rinses are the same. Saltwater rinses can be made at home with warm water and salt, whereas store-bought types contain a variety of ingredients ranging from fluoride (Neutrafluor) for high decay rates in the mouth; to alcohol (Listerine) for breath freshening; and chlorhexidine (Savacol) for gum disease issues. Note that mouth rinses shouldn’t be used long-term without the consultation and guidance of your dentist or dental hygienist.
