Healthy Hygiene Tip: Chewing gum

After eating a meal, our teeth are more at risk of an ‘acid attack’. This is acid produced by plaque bacteria and the sugars in our food and drink. This acid slowly dissolves away the enamel and dentine (the layer underneath the enamel), which produces a hole in your tooth to form a cavity.

Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates the production of saliva (the mouth’s natural defence against acid), which helps protect your teeth and gums in between meals when it may not be possible to brush with a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Remember, we must allow about 30 minutes to pass before brushing our teeth as this too can erode the enamel.
