Toothpicks are one of the most common items for Australians to choke on! Not only this, there's a high incidence of swallowed toothpicks causing puncture injuries. Children are also at higher risk of toothpick-related ear and eye injuries. Even when used for their dental purpose, they can be damaging to the gums leaving scratches and splinters.

Toothpicks can damage your gums. Use interdental brushes instead for a gentler alternative. If you prefer to poke something in between your teeth to clean out any troublesome food, I recommend using some handy products that are designed to be much more effective and won't injure your tissues! Pixters
interdental brushes and SupaGrip flossers; and G.U.M. Softpicks are my personal favourites. You can pick these up at the pharmacy.
