Root canals at Bite Dental Studios Brisbane

What is a root canal?

A root canal treatment is a dental procedure where the infected pulp inside a tooth is replaced with a filling. The pulp in the tooth is made up of specialised dental cells, blood vessels, tissue fibres and nerve fibres. When this pulp is inflamed or infected you may notice a throbbing feeling, sensitivity to hot or cold food and beverages, or inflamed gums and swelling.

If you leave it untreated it can cause complications such as spreading the infection into the surrounding bone, bone loss in the jaw or the tooth may have to be removed.

How does it become infected?

There a number of causes that may lead to infection including deep tooth decay, repeated dental procedures on one tooth and traumatic damages such as a crack, chip or a root fracture.

Is the procedure painful?

The process of a root canal treatment is often actually painless. As the nerve in the tooth is gone it can be compared to having your fingernails trimmed or hair cut – there are no nerve fibres left to feel pain. Often at Bite Dental Studios Brisbane our patients will fall asleep while we do our root canal treatments.

How is a root canal treatment performed?

As you would expect from Bite Dental we only use the best materials available in our treatments. We use our root canal instruments once before disposal to prevent the risk of them snapping in your tooth and we do our root canal treatments over two appointments as this gives a better success rate.

To give you an idea of how your root canal treatment will unfold:

  • The procedure is usually performed using a local anaesthetic.
  • We remove the decayed portions of the tooth and any affected filling.
  • The infected pulp is extracted.
  • The root canal will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any bacteria.
  • The tooth is then flushed with disinfectants and dried.
  • Once we can see it is completely infection free, the root canal will be filled.

What do I need to know post-treatment?

You may feel some tenderness in your mouth and jaw a few days after your treatment which is normal. We suggest you don’t eat anything until the numbness in your mouth wears off and be sure to brush and floss your teeth as you normally would. If you start to develop a visible swelling inside or outside of your mouth or the tenderness isn’t going away after a few days, please get in touch with us straight away.

Are you experiencing any of the following symptoms?

  • Unprovoked pain or discomfort
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold food and beverages
  • Pain when you chew food
  • Swollen gums
  • Facial swelling near your jaw
  • Loosening of a tooth

At Bite Dental Studios Brisbane, these procedures are very common and completed successfully every day. If you live in Brisbane or work in Brisbane CBD and are experiencing tooth pain, whether you think you need a root canal or not, it’s time to make an appointment.

By taking action immediately and assessing the area that’s causing you discomfort, you can often avoid more serious and potentially painful issues in the future.

Are root canals expensive?

As with all medical and dental procedures prevention is less expensive than cure. With root canals there are many factors involved with the cost – from re-using the instruments which clean out the tooth, to completing the treatment in ‘one visit’ to cut down clinical time. It is very hard to give an accurate costing over the phone as even the number of canals inside each tooth can vary.

The best way is to make an appointment so that we can take a look and give you a more accurate quote of what fees would be expected to ensure you have a successful outcome if you require root canal treatment.

As you would expect from Bite Dental Studio Brisbane we only use the best materials available in our treatments. We use our root canal instruments once before disposal to prevent the risk of them snapping in your tooth and we do our root canal treatments over two appointments as this gives a better success rate. As we treat our friends we make sure we do the right thing by them.
